Background music for gyms and fitness studios

Tempo-matched playlists, multi-zone, properly licensed, plays offline. Music that gets your members training harder and keeps the licensing officer off your back.

A gym’s music isn’t background. It’s part of the workout. Get it right and your members train harder, stay longer, and come back. Get it wrong – or rely on someone’s personal Spotify – and you’re risking both atmosphere and licensing fines. We handle the music so you can focus on running the business.

What every UK gym needs to know about playing music

If your gym is open to the public, playing music there is a “public performance” under UK copyright law. That means two licences:

PRS for Music covers the songwriters and composers. PPL covers the recording artists and labels.

Most gyms hold these together through TheMusicLicence, the combined PRS/PPL scheme. If your gym runs exercise-to-music classes – spin, HIIT, body pump, aerobics, anything class-based – you also need PPL’s Exercise to Music tariff (PPLPP222) on top of the standard licence. The classes tariff is a common compliance gap and routinely caught in audits.

What’s not legal – even with TheMusicLicence in place – is playing Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music or YouTube through your gym’s sound system. Consumer streaming services are licensed for personal use only. Their terms of service explicitly exclude commercial use. The fact that “every gym does it” doesn’t change the contract you’ve agreed to, and it doesn’t help when a PRS officer walks in during a class.

This is where Rosi fits in. Our music library is licensed for commercial use, properly encrypted, and delivered through a system designed for gym environments – not a consumer app repurposed for business. You still need TheMusicLicence  – nobody can replace those – but you won’t have a separate streaming compliance problem on top of them.

Why gym music matters more than most operators realise

The relationship between music and exercise performance is one of the best-studied in sport psychology. The right music in the right zone at the right time directly affects how hard your members train and how long they stay.

Member performance

Multiple studies show music synchronised with exercise tempo improves stamina, increases endurance, and elevates mood during workouts. The centre for research has documented physical and psychological effects from properly matched music.

Member retention

Members who associate your gym with the right sound come back more often and renew. Gyms with a poor or inconsistent music programme see measurably lower retention, particularly in the 3-6 month window when new joiners decide whether to stay.

Class energy

Spin, HIIT, body pump – music-led classes live or die by their soundtrack. Instructor-curated playlists routinely have licensing problems. A properly licensed pool of class-appropriate music removes that risk entirely.

Brand identity

Boutique gyms, especially, sell on atmosphere. A boutique studio with a Spotify playlist on shuffle is undermining its own premium positioning. The right curation is part of the product, not an afterthought.

Six things that matter in a gym environment

Tempo and BPM awareness

Playlists curated to match the workout zone. Higher BPMs for cardio floors, mid-tempo for free weights, lower tempo for stretching and cool-down. Not random Spotify-style mixes.

Multi-zone for different spaces

Different music in different parts of the gym, all running simultaneously. Workout floor, free weight area, studio, stretching zone, reception, café, changing rooms – each with its own programming and schedule.

Time-of-day scheduling

Calmer in the morning when members are doing rehab and mobility. Higher energy at lunchtime and in the evening when members are pushing for PBs. Set it once, runs forever, change whenever you want.

Plays offline

Tuesday evening, broadband drops mid-class, music keeps playing. The system caches your scheduled playlists locally so a connection blip doesn’t silence a packed studio.

Fully licensed
