Time to cut up a rug with the Dance stations!!!
BBC Radio 1 Dance and Global’s Capital Dance feature a cross section of the latest releases and also DJ sets from some high profile Disc Jockeys in the world of dance, while Global’s other offering, Heart Dance and Nation Dance feature a much smaller cross section of current and in Heart’s case sometimes quite cheesy older dance, and in the old Wireless Virgin Groove case some songs which most music fans would not really classify as dance music at all! – Maybe that’s why they abandoned it in 2022..
Union Jack Dance was a station for UK produced dance only… Earlier in 2020 we described it as featuring a fair proportion of trip hop and big-beat EDM, which, it has to be said, was pioneered in this country, but might not be considered such a broad reaching “easy listen” as some other more commercial dance tunes, if you know what we mean, however, it seems to have had a Summer 2021 makeover, and thereafter played a more “populist” selection of songs with a good beat, to include a lot more blatant pop and pop dance offerings than before… so a lot more akin to Virgin Groove…. but alas it was not enough to save it, and the station closed in March 2022. Virgin Groove was then closed temporarily for the Summer of 2022, being replaced by Virgin Pride, but did not return thereafter, being replaced by Virgin 80’s plus instead, who’s figures are now included on the ‘Oldies’ page. Both Union Jack Dance’s and Virgin Groove’s figures are still included in this analysis at this time, from before they closed – Note that Analysis of Virgin Groove does NOT include the Chris Evans Breakfast Show music which is just his main “Virgin Radio” show simulcast on Groove, and general Virgin Radio music rather than “Groove” Songs which played the rest of the day.
