The technology behind our background music service - what's actually running when your venue plays the right music at the right time.

This page is for prospects who want depth. If you're evaluating background music providers and you've got a technical audience to convince - operations, IT, or your AV partner - this is what you'll show them. None of this matters to your customers walking into your venue. All of it matters to the people deploying and maintaining the system.

Built for the operational realities of commercial venues

Most background music services were built as consumer streaming products with a B2B label slapped on top. They assume always-on internet, a small number of zones, a single audio source per venue, and tolerable downtime when something breaks. None of those assumptions hold in real commercial environments.

A spa needs different music in five zones with no interruption when guests are mid-treatment. A retail chain needs centrally-managed brand consistency across forty stores. A cruise ship needs sixty zones playing reliably on satellite-constrained bandwidth, mid-Atlantic, with zero margin for failure. A gym needs class music at the right BPM with offline reliability through the busiest sessions of the week.

The Rosi platform was built around these realities from the start. Music plays from local storage on hardware in your venue. Updates are delivered over whatever internet connection you have - broadband, satellite, mobile - using bandwidth-efficient delta packages, not constant streaming. Control happens through a web interface or mobile app, with role-based access so your team can do what they need to without breaking what they shouldn't.

It runs on standard Windows or Linux hardware. It scales from one zone in a single venue to thousands of zones across a global fleet. And it sounds better than the alternatives because of how it handles audio - about which more below.

What the platform actually does

Six capabilities that matter once you get past the music itself. Each one solves a problem that operators routinely hit with consumer-grade or first-generation B2B alternatives.

Windows and Linux playback

The playback engine runs as a service on standard Windows or Linux hardware - no proprietary appliance, no specialist OS, no vendor lock-in. If your IT team already manages Windows servers or Linux containers, Rosi fits the way you already work. If they don't, we supply small Linux-based playback boxes that just work.

Web-based control interface

The whole system is managed through a browser. Playlists, schedules, zones, content updates, reporting - all in one web interface. No software to install on staff machines. Works on any modern browser, on Mac, Windows, or anything else with a screen.

Mobile control with role-based access

Native iOS and Android apps for venue staff who need to adjust the music on the floor. Role-based access control means a duty manager can switch playlists but can't change the schedule; a head office user can do everything; a contractor can do nothing unless explicitly granted. Permissions per-user, per-venue, per-zone.

Unlimited zone scaling

There's no software limit on the number of audio zones per venue. The constraint is the soundcard hardware - typically 32 outputs per playback machine, and you can run as many playback machines as you need. Cruise installations run 60+ zones from a clustered deployment. A single shop runs one or two. Same platform, different scale.

LUFS-aware audio normalisation

Background music libraries span decades of recorded music. A 1985 track and a 2024 track were mastered to completely different loudness standards - modern tracks are heavily compressed, older ones aren't. Most music systems just play whatever volume the file is mastered at, leaving you with jarring volume jumps between tracks. Rosi runs live LUFS measurement, a transparent four-band compressor, and a limiter on the output of every zone. Old songs and modern tracks sound consistent. You won't notice the system working, which is the point.

GPS-aware scheduling and weather-driven rules

Each playback endpoint can be configured with a manual location or GPS-derived position. The playlist rule engine uses location to trigger location-based announcements (cruise ships approaching a port, multi-site retailers running region-specific promotions) and pulls live weather data to adjust mood and schedules automatically. Rain in your area? The system can shift to calmer playlists or skip the upbeat outdoor-themed content. Set the rules once, the system handles the rest.

Integrated digital signage, not bolted-on

Most background music systems either don't do signage at all, or offer a primitive image-rotation feature. Rosi handles digital signage as a first-class capability alongside music - same control interface, same scheduling engine, same zone awareness.

The signage engine supports static images, video, full HTML pages, and a built-in web-based template-driven slide builder. Build a promotional slide deck in the web interface - no Photoshop, no design tools, no external assets - using templates that match your brand. Schedule slides to play with music, replace music, or sync with announcements.

Common use cases:

  • Retail promotions - push a seasonal campaign across every store from head office, scheduled to appear on in-store displays for the duration of the promotion
  • Cruise wayfinding and event signage - show the day's activities, dining hours, and shore excursion times in each zone's displays, automatically updated per itinerary
  • Gym class schedules - display upcoming classes in each studio's zone, with the music synchronised to the class start
  • Hotel and hospitality information - restaurant specials, spa appointment availability, weather forecasts, all in the relevant zones

Because the signage and music engines share the same zone model and the same scheduling system, you don't end up running two parallel systems with two parallel content workflows. One platform, one team, one set of rules.

For hospitality groups using Sotto Music, the same signage capability is available - same underlying platform, same control interface.

How music gets to your venue and stays legal

The music library on each playback endpoint is stored locally - typically thousands of tracks per installation, curated by our team for the venue's profile. The library updates incrementally over whatever internet connection your venue has. Updates are compressed, deduplicated, and bandwidth-efficient. A typical weekly update is a few megabytes per venue, not gigabytes.

All content on local playback hardware is encrypted at rest using AES-XTS, the same cipher mode used for full-disk encryption in BitLocker, FileVault and Linux dm-crypt. The encryption serves two purposes: it protects the music library from extraction or piracy if a playback machine is ever physically removed or accessed, and it gives publishers and licensing bodies confidence that our distribution chain is professionally managed.

Licensing sits with you, the venue operator, not with us. UK venues need TheMusicLicence (PRS for Music + PPL) for the public performance of music. Specialist venues - exercise studios running classes, broadcasters, cruise lines flagged outside the UK - may need additional licensing on top. We can advise on what your specific venue needs, but we can't grant the licences themselves. Nobody can. That's how UK music licensing works.

What we do guarantee is that the music we deliver is licensed for commercial use. Consumer services like Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube are not. The fact that other venues use them doesn't change that. Rosi is the alternative that gives you the same library convenience without the underlying compliance risk.

How it gets deployed

Rosi adapts to your existing setup rather than requiring you to rebuild around it. Three common deployment patterns, each suited to a different venue scale.

Single-venue, single-PC

For an independent shop, a single boutique gym, a small spa. One playback machine, one to four zones depending on what the venue needs. Web interface for management, mobile app for floor staff. Installs in under a day, typically using hardware you already own.

Multi-zone, multi-machine

For large single-site venues - flagship retail stores, hotels, cruise ships, conference centres. Multiple playback machines clustered together to deliver more zones than a single PC can drive, all centrally managed. Typically 20-60+ zones, with audio routed via Dante (Audinate) or direct line-out into existing AV infrastructure.

Multi-site enterprise

For chains, groups, fleets. Central management distributes content, schedules, and configuration changes to every venue from one dashboard. Each venue's playback hardware operates autonomously when connectivity drops, then resyncs when it returns. Used today across retail chains, hotel groups (via Sotto), and cruise fleets.

What it integrates with

Rosi doesn't replace your existing audio infrastructure - it works with whatever you've already got.

Audio output - Standard line-level audio, WASAPI and ASIO on Windows, ALSA on Linux. Works with any commercial-grade soundcard or audio interface. Multi-zone outputs route into your mixing console, audio matrix, or amplifier rack the same way any other source does.

Audio-over-IP - Support for Dante (Audinate), the de facto standard for commercial audio networking. Each zone's audio appears as a Dante channel on your network and can be routed via Dante Controller into any Dante-enabled system. For new-build venues and refits, this dramatically reduces cabling complexity.

Existing PA systems - Rosi outputs a clean audio signal that drives any amplifier, mixer, or PA system. No specialist equipment required. We've installed alongside existing infrastructure from QSC, Symetrix, BSS, Crown, Bose, and others - the system is brand-agnostic.

Control and reporting - Web interface for management, native mobile apps for floor staff, API access for integration with operational dashboards or business intelligence systems. Play-out reporting flows to whatever data warehouse you use, in standard formats.

Reliability is the feature most operators care about most

A music system that fails during service is a music system that costs you customers, staff goodwill, and management attention. The Rosi platform was built around three reliability principles:

Offline-first playback. The music isn't streamed; it's played from local storage. Internet outages don't silence venues. The system uses the connection for updates and reporting, not for live playback.

Independent zones. Each zone operates independently of the others. A failure in one zone doesn't cascade to the rest. A cruise ship with 60 zones won't go silent because one playback machine has a problem.

Operational diagnostics. Every playback endpoint reports its status - what's playing, in which zone, at what volume, with what error history - to a central dashboard. Issues are visible to the support team before the venue staff notice them. Most are resolved remotely without any visit required.

System uptime across our installed base sits at 99.9%+ measured at the zone level. For most installations the only downtime is hardware-related (a power supply failing, a network cable disconnected), not software. The software itself runs for years without restart on properly-specified hardware.
