Country Music Stations
Country Music is only really a minority genre in the UK there is no doubt, but it is popular enough for the big radio groups to cater for it to some extent. Here we see Global’s “Smooth” brand offshoot “Smooth Country” firmly at the ‘pop’ end of country music spectrum, plus two stations for Bauer.. Downtown Country, a local offshoot of the “Downtown” Northern Ireland brand, plus Absolute Radio Country, a UK national branded station which has in fact been in operation since 2019 (previously as Country Hits Radio), focused on modern country music and aimed at 25-44 year olds. One would imagine that both Bauer country stations might be programmed along similar lines, but the different numbers of songs and play profiles would suggest that these are still quite independently programmed, at this stage at least, and Downtown Country’s upticks show a lot more variety is certainly being played at the weekends here, and to a lesser extent, but still visible on Absolute Country.
